Who is Hosting Express, and how long have you been around for?

Hosting Express is a 100% Kiwi owned web hosting brand. Our parent company was established in 2001, and is one of New Zealand’s longest established web hosting providers. So we have been around for a very long time, and thus have a vast amount of knowledge of the Web Hosting and Domain Name industry in New Zealand.  Over the years we have seen many companies come and go, or be absorbed into larger companies, where in many cases their level of service has dropped off.  Many other NZ web hosting providers  are very young,  some even less than a year old, and are still in the learning stage of their business life. However, would you trust your website with a company that has only been around for a short period of time, where you don’t know if they have a long term sustainable business model? Or would you rather trust your businesses website with a NZ Company that has been providing quality hosting to Kiwis for well over a decade?

Unlike many hosting providers now operating in NZ, we are also still 100% New Zealand owned, and we don’t have any overseas shareholders. This means ALL profits stay in NZ. We are also registered for GST, and pay our full share of taxes into the NZ economy. So not only are you supporting a NZ owned business, you are also supporting the New Zealand economy by buying your web hosting through us.

How easy is it to order web hosting from Hosting Express?

It’s very simple!

All you need to do is go to our Sign Up Form , fill in your contact details and domain name, agree to our terms, and that is the first step completed. We will then manually review the application, and send you payment information. Once payment has been confirmed, the domain name and hosting account details will then be setup for you.

If you choose to register or transfer your domain name to us, we will change all the domain settings for you. Otherwise you will need to contact your domain provider to point the domain to the hosting servers.

For security, we setup all hosting accounts manually, to minimise the risk of any nasties signing up to our services. Some other hosts have an automated signup system, however from our experience this can cause problems for other users on the server if a spammer or hacker signs up and causes problems on the server. Manually processing signup applications means we can usually identify any potential nasties, before an account gets setup for them.

Where are your web hosting servers based?

This depends on the web hosting plan you have signed up to. Our Kiwi Web Hosting plan is hosted in New Zealand on Auckland based web hosting servers. We have chosen Auckland to house this plan, due to the low seismic risk, and the high quality datacentres and networks now available in Auckland. The servers for this plan are housed in the Vocus Data Centre in Auckland, which is a professional grade datacentre. All server technicians are based in Auckland, and have direct access to the datacentre. Our CPanel hosting plans are hosted on premium CPanel servers in the USA, and are staffed by technicians with many years of knowledge in managing CPanel web servers. Our head office is based in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, which is also home to some of New Zealand’s leading tech companies. All of the support we offer is provided from inside New Zealand, and unlike many web hosting providers, we don’t subcontract our our front-line support offshore to low wage economies. This means you are communicating with Kiwis in Kiwiland!

How many websites can I host in my hosting plan?

This is dependent on the web hosting plan you are on. Most of our CPanel hosting plans can host multiple websites, which will consist of a primary website, and the ability to then setup multiple add-on websites, each with their own domain name.  Each hosting plan comes with a single hosting control panel for managing those websites. If you are on a single website plan and need to host additional websites, all you need to do is purchase another hosting plan, or upgrade to a hosting plan that allows the hosting of multiple websites. Each hosting plan comes with it’s own single control panel and resources. Additional domain names are charged at our normal domain registration fee.

Can you transfer my website, email, databases etc, from my existing provider?

We can often do this for you, but only if your existing web hosting company uses a compatible version of the CPanel Hosting Control Panel. We do charge from $49.95 +gst for this service, and require a minimum of a 12 month web hosting contract.  Please note that transferring files this way is not full-proof, due to differing server configurations, so we don’t guarantee the data integrity, and that everything will work correctly after transfer. This is because your old host maybe running older software, or have technical issues with the way they have setup your account, which prevents a successful transfer. You also may need to make some changes to your websites configuration after a transfer has taken place, to get it working on the new server. The transfer fee is payable whether the transfer is 100% successful or not. In most cases trasnfers will be successful, but in the odd case transfers can fail, for the reasons previously mentions.
If your existing web host doesn’t use CPanel, it isn’t a problem to transfer your website and email addresses, as you will be able to manually setup your email accounts, upload your website via FTP, and setup any databases. You won’t however be able to transfer stored emails. Due to the time manual transfers take, we don’t usually do manual website transfers for non CPanel transfers, and you are best to get your website designer to manage the transfer for you. If you do want us to do a manual transfer, we would need to provide your with a cost estimate first. For any website issues after the transfer has taken place that we can’t solve, you would need to contact your websites designer/developer who setup the website for you.
We don’t provide any guarantee for any hosting account transfer service, and it is provided as is.

In order to do a CPanel transfer we need the following informtion which you should get from your existing web hosting provider prior to signing up.

Your CPanel login URL
Your CPanel Username
Your CPanel Password

Please also make sure you are signing up to a hosting plan that has enough disk-space and bandwidth, and that your existing account has at least 50% of it’s disk-space allocation remaining, as the backup we need to generate needs enough disk-space to save to. You may need to temporarily upgrade your CPanel hosting account with your old provider if you don’t have enough disk-space, to allow the backup to be made.
Please note that when a transfer is done, the technicians will in simple terms , take a server snapshot of your account at a particular time on the old server, and restore that snapshot to the new server. However your website and email will still be loading from the old server until your domain has fully switched and propagated over to the new server, which can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or so. So due to time delays in doing the backup and restore process, the data that is moved will be older than your live data. So after the domain has switched over, the data on the new server maybe anywhere between a couple of hours, to a day or so old. Although emails shouldn’t get lost, there maybe a period where new emails will be getting delivered to your old web hosts server, and not in your new hosting account. So you should make sure that you sign into your old hosts server to download those emails. You should check your old servers email accounts for at least a few days after the domain has switched over, just to make sure there aren’t any emails that have been delivered to it. After the domain has fully connected up, all emails should be getting delivered to the new server.

Can you transfer my domain name to your system?

Yes, all we need it initiate a domain transfer is your UDAI or Authorisation code, which you will need to request from your exsiting provider. Domain transfers are free, however non .NZ domain names will need to be renewed for at least a year before a domain transfer can be initiated. .NZ domains will transfer instantly, and international domains can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to complete transfer.

Do you offer reseller web hosting plans?

No we don’t, as reseller hosting is problematic when it comes to resource usage and server abuse. Often reseller hosting gets abused, as we have no direct control over what sorts of websites get hosted on the platform. However, even though we don’t sell reseller plans, there is nothing stopping anyone buying multiple web hosting plans from us, and reselling them onto their clients. The major benefit of this is that we provide your clients with direct end support, so you don’t need to worry about supporting your clients with day to day support requests. With normal reseller hosting, the reseller account owner has to provide that support, which is potentially a time consuming and costly exercise. So we believe that reselling our single hosting plans is a better long term solution for most web designers than reseller hosting. This way web designers can concentrate on what they do best, designing websites, and not have to worry about also providing hosting support to,  which is a 24/7/365 arrangement. There are some companies that specialise in providing reseller hosting, but from our experience this hosting can have many thousands of websites crammed onto a single server, which can result in poor reliability and file loading speeds.

Can I have my own domain based email accounts with my website hosting?

Of course you can. That is one of the main advantages of owning a domain name, you can use it for email, and all of our hosting accounts support domain based email. From the control panel you will also be able to setup domain email forwarding, or setup MX records to point your email hosting to specialist email providers such as Google Gmail or Microsoft Outlook etc.

Will my new domain name be registered under my name?

Yes it will. Whatever personal or company name you register your new hosting account under, will be the name registered as the Legal Registrant of the domain name. Please note that some domain providers may register your domain under their own name, which mean that legally they may own your domain. We would never, and and never done this, and all domains are always registered under the name of the registrant that signed up for the domain name. Also you domain will be able to be self managed from inside your NZ Domain Manager Account, so you will have control over it at all times.

Does my domain name need to be registered with Hosting Express, in order to use your web hosting or email services?

Yes and No. If you have just a single domain name that you are using with your website, then you can use any domain provider you wish. However it does often make things a lot easier for everyone if the domain is registered in our systems, as we can easily make your DNS changes for you so you don’t have to worry about making them yourself. It also is easier for us to troubleshoot problems. If your domain is registered with another company you would need to request that they make any domain settings changes for you.

If you are on our Kiwi Web Hosting plan, and if you are planning to use multiple domain names (eg you have a co.nz , a .nz and a .com version of your domain), and you want to setup email accounts using all those domains, then you will need to host those additional domains in your control panel, before you will be able to setup email addresses for them.

Do you offer FREE web hosting trials?

For server security and protection of our clients websites, we don’t offer free web hosting trials. However people are free to try out our hosting, and our minimum contract period for some of our plans is a just one month. So this will give you plenty of time to try out hosting your website, and if it isn’t a good match for you, you can contact us to cancel it. If you do try out our service and decide it isn’t for you, you will need to contact us to cancel your hosting prior to the contract roll over at the beginning of the next billing month, otherwise you will continue to be billed for it, as all web hosting is an ongoing service contract and automatically rolls over.

Do you provide FREE web hosting to New Zealand Charities?

Although we would love to provide free web hosting, at the end of the day our staff do need to be paid, and our servers need to be paid for. So providing free hosting to certain people or organisations is not a sustainable business model for us. Instead we believe that because our hosting prices are so affordable, that any charity or non profit organisation should be able to afford them. Our pricing starts from just a one dollar a week, which is around the price of a cup of coffee a month, who couldn’t afford that?

Most Charities these days are operated like a business, and have paid staff and budgets, so have budgets for core services like websites and hosting. As web and email hosting is such great value anyway, web hosting is a tiny expenditure for most organisations. There are some other hosting providers who may provide free web hosting to non profits, however some charities have learnt the hard way that both reliability and service levels of some of these providers can be less than satisfactory, and charities are like all businesses, require top level service and reliability. We have helped many charities over the years who have had bad experiences with the free or low cost web hosting, and they were only too happy to pay us to take over the hosting for them.
